4 Tips to Protect Your Eyes On Vacation At the Beach

1. Wear Sunglasses

Wear sunglasses as long as you’re outside at the beach. When choosing sunglasses, look for brands that state they protect your eyes from UVA and UVB rays. If you normally wear prescription glasses, be sure to get prescription sunglasses before your trip to the beach. This way, you won’t be tempted to wear your normal lenses instead of your sunglasses.

2. Wear Goggles In the Water

Wear goggles when playing in the water to protect your eyes from the salty ocean water. Make sure the goggles fit and are comfortable on your face before going to the beach.

3. Know What to Do If You Get Sand In Your Eye

If you get sand in your eye, blink several times. You’ll be tempted to rub your eye – don’t do it! If you have a saline solution, flush your eye until the particle comes out. If you aren’t able to get the sand out of your eye, go to an emergency room for help.

4. Watch for Symptoms of “Snow Blindness”

Snow blindness is a condition that occurs when the cornea is damaged by overexposure to UV rays. Essentially, it’s a kind of sunburn on your corneas. Symptoms of snow blindness can cause problems like pain in your eyes, burning, sensitivity to light, red eyelids, swelling around the eyes, watery eyes, headache, and even blurry vision or temporary loss of vision.

This condition can be scary if you don’t know what’s happening! Wearing sunglasses can help protect your eyes. Snow blindness usually goes away in a few days, but check with your doctor if you believe you’re suffering from this condition.
