Common Signs of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction on Children  

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a frequently occurring optometric condition among adults. The primary symptom of MGD is dry or irritated eyes, but the issue can generate pretty significant problems with vision if left untreated. While adults are the most common patients found to have MGD, kids can also be diagnosed with the condition.

Experts have determined that 15 percent of children may also have MGD, even though the condition is commonly under or misdiagnosed. Here are a few signs of MGD to keep in mind if you suspect your child has problems with dry eyes.

Irritated, Itchy, or Burning Eyes

You may notice that your child’s eyes seem to be irritated on a regular basis. They may rub at their eyes, complain that their eyes are itchy, or say their eyes are burning. Rubbing the eyes may also lead to frequent eyelid infections.

Excessive “Crust” Around Eyelashes and Eyelids

One of the telltale indicators of MGD in children is crust formation around the eyelids and lashes. You may notice the problem more when the child first wakes up in the morning. This crusting or scaling occurs because there is not enough oil being released from the gland to slough away typical bacteria that can gather around the eyes.

Redness Around the Edges of the Eyelid

Your child may have a reddish line just at the edge of their eyelids, and that redness can sometimes spread outward to cover more of the eyelid. This redness is a sign of inflammation, which may be related to excessive bacteria, eye-rubbing, or other issues associated with MGD.

Lash Loss

In severe cases, children with MGD can have problems with losing their eyelashes. Eyelash loss can be caused by excessively rubbing the eyes because they feel irritated. However, lash loss can also be caused by ongoing inflammation around the delicate hair follicles in the lids.
